Despite the bigger screen size, this TV is also packed with LG’s technology. But to get one, you need to pay a hefty price of £6,999.00. Is this TV worth investing that much or you’re better off with other models? Here’s what we think.

In terms of picture quality performance, the LG 86SJ957V perform really well in this matter. With the use of an IPS panel, the viewing angle is greatly enhanced. You can view at an angle of up to 178 degrees without and saturation of the brightness and contrast of the colours. Furthermore, the use of IPS panel allows better colour reproduction and representation as well as much more intense white colours, and better response times compared to AMOLED panels.
Based on the design, it seems that LG wants to make this a thin TV thus the reason why they opted for an Edge type led backlight system. The use of Edge LED Backlight system is a downer for us because Edge LED backlights cause the black levels of the TV to be not so deep. Furthermore, the edge area of the TV has a tendency to bleed or be brighter than the centre and that’s definitely an issue given the screen size of this TV.
Though the Edge LED backlight can be disappointing, LG compensates that with the inclusion of LG’s Ultra Luminance, True Colour Accuracy, and premium HDR support.
The LG’s Ultra Luminance technology boosts the TV’s brightness and contrast to further improve the black level performance. Added to that, the inclusion of True Colour Accuracy gives this TV a far more advanced colour mapping technology. Effectively correcting colour distortions and enabling this TV to deliver a picture that is far more accurate and natural.
Lastly, this TV features local dimming. To further compensate the use of Edge LED Backlight, LG equipped this TV with local dimming which dims the backlight behind parts of the screen that are displaying black. This then makes black colour and level appear deeper and darker. Which is great.
Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the support of multi-HDR platform. This TV supports content that uses HDR10, HLG, or Dolby Vision to further give you the best picture quality for its size and price.
LG wanted to focus on picture quality and image reproduction performance and let Harman Kardon take care of the TV’s audio performance.
The LG 86SJ957V features a whopping 80W speaker with 30W of subwoofer power. It’s as if you have a powerful soundbar system at home but the bright side of that is that it is built-in and not bought separately.
Overall, in terms of audio quality, the performance if very satisfying. The 5.2 ch speakers that are designed and engineered by Harman Kardon is really good. Stunningly good in its aspects to be honest. Once you try it you will feel like you have a home cinema system. The inclusion of ULTRA Surround further takes the audio quality to the higher level.
In terms of gaming, this LG 86SJ957V is probably one of the best TV to have for gaming. With a huge screen size of 86 inches, you’ll definitely find yourself immersively enjoying playing video games.
This TV features a native refresh rate of 120 Hz which is definitely a plus. Enabling you to enjoy your video game experience of as much as 120 frames per second. Giving you that smooth fluidity of gaming without any hitch or screen tearing.
In terms of input lag, this is the department where things will get to be divisive. The input lag rating of this TV is less than 50ms which is not bad at all given the screen size. Although there are other better options out there if you want this mainly for gaming. We find that the price and features are not worth it for gaming. It preferably oriented towards movie lovers.
The LG 86SJ957V is probably of the best big sized TV and one of the best super UHD smart TV. Despite having all the best image enhancing technology, there’s always one thing that will disappoint you. For us, the use of Edge LED with a big screen size TV is definitely something that is a deal breaking. However, LG did compensate with the inclusion of their image-enhancing technologies.
What we liked about the LG 86SJ957V is its screen size, the powerful speakers, the inclusion of almost all LG image-enhancing technologies, and the elegant design. With just this TV alone, you can have your very own cinema system at home that comes with a stunningly beautiful display and a satisfying audio loudness without losing audio integrity and detail.
What we did not like about this TV is its price, the use of edge led backlight system, and the use of IPS. Yes, you might just actually be paying a hefty price for the screen size but as a consumer, LG should have at least use OLED or direct LED and not Edge LED. However, given the price point of £6,999, you’re definitely paying for the screen size and not so much on the picture quality.
- Stunning Picture Quality
- Ultra Luminance with True Colour Accuracy Technology
- Massive Screen Size with Powerful Speakers
- Very Expensive
- Bleeding and Edge Brightness Issue
- Not for Gaming
